Warum Besetzung? / Why Occupation?

–––––

Sometimes – especially in authoritarian structures – the decision-makers can afford not to listen sufficiently to all objections. One such objection is climate change (as the Federal Constitutional Court recently ruled) and one such authoritarian structure is the concept of the (national) state. Therefore, it is sometimes inevitable to break existing law, especially when existing law is unjust. Some call this idea civil disobedience (some, e.g. don’t see themselves as civil), and in our case it is ultimately directed against the destructive effects of the logic of unlimited growth.

As a random gathering of people who share the action against this highway, we do not have a unified self-conception. However, the following three core ideas are frequently found in this occupation:

1) The fight for Garni and the swamp

The highway that is to be built here is the largest, most expensive and most environmentally damaging project in the Federal Transport Plan. More than 200 km of highway are to be newly built in two federal states, long stretches through swamps, which have a key role in the race against climate change. With the Garni I defend the swamp, the real capital of this region.

2) The fight for climate justice

The Garni is also representative of the burning rainforests, the droughts on the other side of the planet, the oceans polluted with plastic, radioactivity and oil, mass livestock farming, and the melting of the polar ice caps. Garni is about the same systemic change that women* in Iran are rebelling for. It’s about the same systemic change it will take to keep this planet from becoming uninhabitable for us – or at least the vast majority of us. Because climate justice is social justice.

3) The fight for social change

I am tired of capitalist-patriarchal hegemony. I am tired of the authoritarian state concept, which visibly does not even manage to ensure the freedom, justice and equality of the majority society. Freedom, justice and equality for minority societies has never existed. But I demand freedom, justice and equality for all! And therefore I demand a different way of living together. Since such a “different way” does not simply fall from the sky, we have to develop and test it, stretch it and challenge it – in practice. For this we need autonomous safer spaces like this one. I have an anti-fascist basic orientation, which means I fight any form of oppression.

Freedom for all.

Justice for all.

Equality for all.

And then peace for all. But not before.
